NUMERICAL ASSOCIATIONS ON A MASCULINE/FEMININE SPECTRUM, SPRING 2019
When I was tasked to complete a follow up to a published statistical study, I wanted to explore how people associate numbers with seemingly ambiguous stimuli, like social constructs. I was interested in this topic because I noticed that I subconsciously associate numbers with genders and colors and I had an inclination that I was not the only one. I thought that this was a worthy pursuit because of the implications on advertisements or other public information that might guide people’s feelings simply based on these subconscious associations. It was also important to provide a follow-up to this study conducted by Northwestern University because of the precious reliance on binary gender standards that had the potential to be updated using a spectrum to represent progressing views about non-binary gender identity.
